A USDOT number is a unique carrier ID issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). It tracks a carrier’s safety record, registration, and inspection history — and it’s free to look up.
What is a USDOT number?
A USDOT number is a unique identifier the FMCSA assigns to commercial vehicles and carriers operating in interstate commerce. It links to the carrier’s safety rating, registration status, inspections, and crash history, and is used by regulators, brokers, and shippers to verify a carrier.
Who needs a USDOT number?
You generally need a USDOT number if you operate vehicles in interstate commerce that: weigh 10,001 lbs or more, transport 8+ passengers (for compensation) or 15+ (not for compensation), or haul hazardous materials requiring a safety permit. Many states also require one for intrastate operations.
How to look up a USDOT number (free)
While our instant lookup tool is being finalized, you can verify any USDOT number for free using the official FMCSA SAFER system:
- Go to the FMCSA SAFER Company Snapshot → safer.fmcsa.dot.gov
- Search by USDOT number, MC number, or company name
- Review the carrier’s registration, safety rating, and operating status
What information does a USDOT lookup show?
| Field | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Legal & DBA name | Who the carrier is |
| Operating status | Active / out of service |
| Safety rating | Satisfactory / conditional / unsatisfactory |
| Power units & drivers | Fleet size |
| Inspections & crashes | Recent safety history |
USDOT number vs MC number
A USDOT number identifies a carrier for safety and registration — most regulated carriers need one. An MC number grants operating authority to move regulated goods or passengers across state lines for hire. Some carriers need both. Learn more on our MC Number Lookup page.
